BOOM: So that's what it was

The Naval Observatory suggests that the explosion heard in 4 states that we heard last night was part of a Russian rocket that was falling back to Earth.

I'm almost embarrassed by how excited everyone got about this.  It was fun trying to figure out what was going on from Twitter and blogs and all that, but in the end it came off as kind of boring.  Like anyone expected anything different.

At least it was fun.  And ultimately, no one got hurt.

Update:  Virginian Pilot is now reporting that it was not a rocket part, but something that is not tracked, which suggests it's wasn't something man made.

Boom

There goes the dynamite. You sure it wasn't that new fandangle missle the North Koreans are testing?

Actually, the paper said

Actually, the paper said this morning that it couldn't have been the Russian rocket. It passed at too high an altitude. So then it must have been either untracked junk or an untracked meteor.

I did get the following idea for a t-shirt: "Nothing says the future like dead aliens" [from outer space].
